My mother purchased this swell book "Galateo or The Rules of Polite Behavior" by Giovanni Della Casa (1503-1956) for me, knowing my love of etiquette books.
Manners are a timeless accountrement but bombardments of abominal behaviors and uncivil exchanges seem to follow us without escape, setting the lowest of standards for our own comportment.
In the new year, I wish to remind myself of the sage writings of my heroines of good manners- Judith Martin and Letitia Baldridge who- with their witty, wise and amusing way- explain the value of polite behavior and the tenents of courteousness and graciousness.
Not only can possessing good manners make you as attractive as honey but you can be prepared to respond with aplomb the next time an officious acquaintance asks how old you are.
I am fortunate to see the most elegant of manners daily in my husband and he sets the standard by which I aspire to live. This year, find ways to set a new standard for your own comportment. I bet your loyal following will grow by leaps and bounds.
