I collect vocabulary books like others collect coins. I thirst to add new words to my vocabulary- spicing up my daily speech with a sassy interjection, gleeful exclamation or erudite noun.
"L is for Lollygag" by Chronicle Books is one of my favorites, with its delightful illustrations by Melinda Beck and its word history of expressions and words that are disappearing from modern dictionaries like "snollygoster"- a shrewd or crooked person; a swindler.
Two of my favorite words from this book are "spindle-shanked" - having long, skinny legs and "codswallop" - yet another load of nonsense.
Other coveted vocabulary books in my library are "Million Dollar Words" by Seth Godin and Margery Mandell and "The Word Museum" by Jeffrey Kacirk.
Discovery of words is a life-long adventure. Start yours today.
